About

Lucas Hamilton

Sole contractor and business owner

My Background

I originally grew up on the West Coast of the South Island, before moving to Nelson to study. I graduated from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, with a national certificate in conservation. I have worked in conservation, as well as working in farming, gardening, commercial cleaning, and all sorts of different labour roles over the years. I came up with the idea of EcoSpray, as a business, after my experiences working in these fields, seeing the effect that hazardous chemicals have on ecosystems.

I believe that as contractors we have a duty of care for the environment and our clients health. I have researched alternatives to the industry standard chemicals, and tested their effectiveness, and achieved great results Seen here.

I am experienced in the use of various power tools, hand tools, herbicide application, cleaning, and vine control.

What solutions I use

I use a number of different solutions for each job. For herbicides controlling grassy weeds, I use a specially manufactured apple cider vinegar product. I also use another organic weed killer that uses plant based acids to achieve similar results. Both products are made in New Zealand. I am growsafe certified, and will use harsher agrichemicals upon request for those harder to control weeds.

For cleaning concrete, brick, and wood surfaces, I use Sodium Percarbonate. This substance is non eco-toxic and breaks down into carbon and oxygen, within hours, not days, like standard outdoor cleaners.

*Note that for stone or marble surfaces, a simple soapy water solution is used, as oxygen or chlorine based bleach are not recommended.

*Sodium Hypochlorite, the industry standard bleach cleaner, may be used if it is the best solution for the job. This is recommended for roof cleans.

For lichen removal, post treatment option, and asphalt cleaning, I use an organic/non eco-toxic solution made in New Zealand. When applied it will last on the surface for months to deter regrowth of organic material.

For staining wood, I use Linseed oil, rather than the far more toxic, store brand wood stain/finish. For wood bleach I also use Oxalic acid. Stain is most often applied after soft wash cleaning. Soft washing is recommended over water blasting, so as not to damage wood grain.

For bin washing, I use a detergent that deodorizes, sanitizes, and helps deter flies, clean off fly spots and fly eggs. I use a New Zealand company that bulk supplies the sanitation, and hospitality industry. They make sure to use recycled plastic for bottles and collect all empty products for reuse.

For all applications, simple precautions must be taken for pets. Moving food, and water bowls, and keeping them away during.
